There is absolutely no reason why you should have to leave the comfort of your home in order to drink and enjoy a latte. In this article we talk you through the process of curating your very own cafe latte at home, all you need is a milk frother!
The word Cafe Latte comes from the Italian “caffellatte”, which literally means “coffee and milk”. Despite its simplicity, latte’s are a popular choice of coffee blend which is why it is readily available at virtually every coffee shop near you. The secret to its success lies in the way the milk is prepared. At coffee shops the barista will most likely make use of a sophisticated coffee machine with a built in milk frother. First, the milk is heated inside a frothing canister, then the steam wand is placed inside, pushing high-pressured steam through the milk whilst the barista moves the canister in circular motions. This causes the air to combine with the milk and emulsifies the fat and sugar inside the milk, leaving behind a creamy, silky texture – a defining characteristic of the perfect latte.
What you will need:
2 shots of freshly brewed espresso
Whole milk
Milk frother
Directions:
- Heat your milk slightly
- Pour the freshly brewed espresso into a 12 ounce mug
- Pour 12 ounces of milk into a frothing canister and insert milk frother, using circular motions as the milk begins to froth. The steaming wand should be placed no further than 2 inches below the surface ensuring that it does not touch the sides of the canister.
- Once the texture becomes silky you know it is ready to pour
- Pour frothed milk over the espresso immediately and enjoy
If you enjoy sugar or syrup inside your latte, add to your espresso blend before adding the milk. It is important to remember that when pouring the frothed milk into your cup, that you do so gently to ensure that the consistency of the milk remains smooth.
With the right espresso blend and a milk frother, you will find yourself going to a coffee shop less and less. The best coffee is made at home!
